Two new stations in the Naples Metro

We're still here with our blog, to tell you, from a somewhat artistic perspective, about two of the new Naples Metro stations, one on Line 1 and the other on Line 6.

So let's start with some news about Line 6, the newest addition for 2024:

Line 6 is a Naples Metro line that connects the city center, with its terminus at Municipio in the San Ferdinando neighborhood, to the west, with its terminus at Mostra in the Fuorigrotta neighborhood.

Line 6 is approximately 6 km long and has a total of 8 stations (Mostra, Augusto, Lala, Mergellina, Arco Mirelli, San Pasquale, Chiaia, Municipio), 4 of which are completely new (Arco Mirelli, San Pasquale, Chiaia, Municipio Line 6), connecting the Mostra D'Oltremare in Naples to Piazza Municipio in just 15 minutes, compared to the average journey time of about 20 minutes by car. It runs through the Fuorigrotta district and the Riviera di Chiaia, allowing for convenient access to the seafront and central areas of the city, while also saving significant amounts of CO2 emissions.

It should be noted that Line 6 currently operates only in limited numbers, closing in the early afternoon, but this should change with the introduction of the new trains.

So let's begin with our photos of the CHIAIA station, prefacing them with an explanatory text:

The station, designed by Uberto Siola, is included in the art stations circuit and was inaugurated on July 17, 2024.

It has two entrances, on different levels. The upper entrance is located in the center of Piazza Santa Maria degli Angeli, in the Monte di Dio area. The lower entrance is on Via Chiaia, near the bridge of the same name.

The artistic installation is the work of Peter Greenaway, who intended to conceptually recreate a journey through the mythology of the Greek deities, starting from the upper entrance and ending at platform level.

The upper entrance is topped by a segmental glass dome made of steel and glass that lets natural light flow for approximately forty meters, illuminating the platforms. At the station entrance, there is a statue of Jupiter with twenty-four arms, representing the protector of travelers.

It's worth noting that Line 6 can be accessed by getting off at the MUNICIPIO station on Line 1 and taking the elevator to the Line 6 station below. Alternatively, those in Vomero can take the Chiaia Funicular and reach the CHIAIA station on Line 6 via Via dei Mille, Via Filangieri, and Via Chiaia.

The second station we're talking about is the most recently opened (April 1, 2025) and is part of Metro Line 1. We're talking about the CENTRO DIREZIONALE station, which serves the administrative and residential complex of the same name.

The station, designed by EMBT, a studio founded by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, serves the Naples business district, home to numerous public offices. The exterior of the railway complex occupies a central area of Isola F and features a wavy roof made of laminated wood, reminiscent of organic forms (inspired by the underground vaults of the Piscina Mirabilis) and creating large shaded areas in the plaza above. [...] The roof spans the entrance hall, which also serves as a connection to the Circumvesuviana station, creating a large covered plaza. [...]

The platform level is located just 12 meters below ground, making the station one of the shallowest on the entire line. Architecturally, it stands out for the use of metal cladding on the walls and suspended ceilings, decorated in the four bright colors typical of the frescoes in ancient Pompeian homes, visible at the archaeological excavations of Pompeii. Completing the reference to the archaeological context are the stylized silhouettes along the walls of the various rooms of the station, inspired by the figures depicted in the Villa of the Mysteries.

Let's continue with our images:

Then in the vicinity of the station we find this sculpture:

And, to end on a light note, these cute silhouettes of Napoli footballers set up to celebrate the Neapolitan team's fourth Scudetto:
