At Villa Pignatelli with Warhol and Banksy

The beautiful spring weather is slowly arriving, so we suggest a stroll through a 19th-century villa with a beautiful garden that regularly hosts art exhibitions and jazz concerts.

We're in Naples, specifically at Villa Pignatelli (*), a neoclassical building located near the waterfront and accessible by Metro Line 6 (SAN PASQUALE Station). For information on the history of the villa and its garden, please visit the Palazzo Reale website, which manages it:

The Villa is an important example of Neapolitan neoclassical architecture, characterized by a fusion of styles, with Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Palladian, and Neo-Pompeian elements. Designed in 1826 by Pietro Valente for Ferdinando Acton, the residence combines architectural elegance with an English landscape park.

Purchased by the Rothschilds in 1841, the Villa underwent decorative transformations, including the Red Salotto and the Ballroom. With the unification of Italy, it passed to Prince Diego Aragona Pignatelli Cortes, who introduced a refined, eclectic style. In 1955, Princess Rosina Pignatelli donated the Villa to the Italian State, founding the Pignatelli Museum, a unique example of a house museum in Naples.

The interiors are arranged around three central living rooms, connecting the monumental Library, the Dining Room, and the elegant rooms furnished with precious furnishings. The collection boasts furniture, silver, bronze, and an important collection of European and Oriental ceramics, including pieces from the Royal Factory of Capodimonte.

After restoration, some of the family's private rooms were reopened in 2015, including the prince's bathroom, the study, and the princess's boudoir, enriched with historic furnishings and works of art.

The Garden of Villa Pignatelli is a precious example of an English garden, designed by Guglielmo Bechi in 1830. The park extends harmoniously around the villa, characterized by winding paths, a scenic fountain, and an exceptional botanical variety. Among the rarest and most impressive species are Araucaria excelsa, Grevillea robusta, Ficus magnolioides, Magnolia grandiflora, Strelitzia augusta, and numerous varieties of palms and cycads.

Let's begin with our images, starting with the Garden itself:

And the exhibitions? When we were there, there was (and will be until June 2, 2026) the exhibition WARHOL VS BANKSY - PASSAGE TO NAPLES, which features various works by the two artists side by side. The museum's website describes it as follows:

[...]

The exhibition offers a stimulating comparison between two seemingly distant artists and personalities: the fabulous world of Andy Warhol, the world's most photographed artist, famous and omnipresent, versus the anonymous Banksy, who made his art a global media event.

Passage to Naples aims to tell the story of how, thirty years later, the two most famous artists on the planet have fallen under the irresistible spell of Naples, Parthenope, Pompeii, Vesuvius, and the Mediterranean and global power of this great cultural capital.

(Note that Banksy's true identity was being revealed at that time.)

Let's now take a look at the images of the works of these two extraordinary artists, starting with two works by Warhol featuring Campbell Soup:

It remains to say that in the northern part of the Villa Pignatelli garden there is a building, the Palazzina Rothschild. On the ground floor, some rooms once used as stables and garages house the Carriage Museum. Unfortunately, it is now closed for major maintenance work on the building.

As soon as it reopens, we will try to visit it and tell you about it.

SEE YOU NEXT TIME!!!
