The Sources of Clitunno, an Umbrian pearl

Dear friends, we continue to propose some nice travel itineraries of the past years, with the aim of at least fighting the depressive effects of this damn virus. And we hope that these memories will soon turn into suggestions to be followed with serenity. Today we go back to August 2015, when with our Florentine friends Carla and Roberto we visited the Sources of Clitunno, in the municipality of Campello sul Clitunno in Umbria. The Clitunno is a river that in ancient times, at the time of the Romans, was navigable and was sung by Properzio and Virgilio; at that time sumptuous villas, temples and spas rose up in the surroundings and religious festivals were celebrated with competitions, gladiator fights and scenic representations. Then in 444 A.D. an earthquake radically changed the territory and considerably reduced the course of the river. The current arrangement of the park is the work of Paolo Campello della Spina who, between 1860 and 1865, had the lake built and the vegetation that still characterizes the place, a water garden covered mainly by poplars and willows, was planted. In 1876 Giosuè Carducci wrote the Ode to the Fonti del Clitumno, describing the magnificence of the place, but a few years earlier it was George Byron who passed by and sang the beauty of the site. As for our needs, it must be said that the short path around the lake is easily accessible with any type of wheelchair. And now let's move on to the images, which we hope give an idea of the beauty of the place and its splendid colors, enhanced by the sunny day:

And then, at the end of this short journey back in time, we join the chorus that rises all over our country: EVERYTHING WILL BE OK, WE WILL MAKE IT!
