Good news: in December 2018 the Antiquarium of Herculaneum reopened, a modern building that was intended to house the finds of the excavations (*) but once completed it had been closed since 1978, and today hosts a first initiative, the exhibition SplendOri. Luxury in ornaments in Herculaneum. The exhibition, which will remain open permanently, exhibits not only a series of gold jewelry and precious objects but also artifacts for personal and daily use, found in the excavation campaign of 1982 (https://ercolano.beniculturali.it/). We immediately see an image of the building that houses the Antiquarium (the white building on the right) preceded on the left by the Boat Pavilion, which we will talk about later.
We enter the exhibition with this hemispherical gold armilla:
a rock crystal necklace:
two gold earrings:
a chalcedony agate cup:
a bronze colander with holes forming an elaborate geometric design:
other jewelry and everyday objects:
We now enter the Boat Pavilion, built specifically to house the wooden boat found near the bank of the port of Herculaneum, overturned by the violent flow of lava mud that buried the Vesuvian sites in 79 AD. The tour allows everyone to closely observe the structure of the boat, about 9 meters long, and some components such as anchor, oars, amphorae.
We close with an image from the top of the excavations, framed by the yellow of the broom:
