Benevento: the Lombards in the South

This time we leave the coasts of Campania and enter the interior, to visit a city that today is the provincial capital, but in the past it was the capital of a very important duchy in the history of Campania and Italy, the Duchy of Benevento, precisely, extreme offshoot of the Lombard dominion in Italy.

Today the city looks like a well-kept, elegant and clean provincial town, with a historic center that is quite easy for those who travel in a chair (sign clearly visible on the car, there is the ZTL in the center); there are also quite steep climbs and descents, but the things we have seen deserve some little effort and are still close to each other and easily accessible.

Let's start with a splendid church of the eighth century, Santa Sofia, and the adjacent Museo del Sannio, a real surprise for the wealth of finds and beauty of the site, with the magnificent Cloister of Santa Sofia. https://www.beniculturalionline.it/location-64_Museo-del-Sannio.php

Also nearby we can access the Hortus Conclusus, an installation by the artist Mimmo Paladino, a famous exponent of the Transavanguardia, in the garden of the ancient convent of San Domenico. However you think about contemporary art, it is worthwhile to be conquered by the magical atmosphere of this site. https://sannio.guideslow.it/poi/hortus-conclusus-benevento/

Moving away a little, we arrive at the famous Arch of Trajan, which at the time of our visit (2015) was being restored but which today is visible in all its majesty.

For lunch, if you want to stay in the city (there is still the Roman Theater to visit, but we haven't tested its accessibility), we found this restaurant: Ver Sacrum (*): Via Stanislao da Bologna, 34, Benevento +39 345 891 6495 https://www.facebook.com/VerSacrum.RestaurantAndWinebar Otherwise, about ten kilometers from Benevento, there is this farm: Fontana dei Fieri (*): Via Fontana dei Fieri 71, Pietrelcina (BN) +39 0824 997552/338 6135701 https://www.facebook.com/masseriafontanadeifieri/ (*) symbol indicating the presence of toilets equipped for the disabled
