Salerno: artist lights and more

This time we present a post entirely based on current events: we are talking about the Artist Lights of Salerno, which will be inaugurated on November 3 and will be switched off on January 21, 2018, even if the precise dates have yet to be confirmed on the official website of the Municipality of Salerno (https://www.lucidartista.it/).

For those few who still do not know this event, it is an imposing set of luminous decorations that extend into all the main streets of Salerno, with particular regard to those of the historic center. By now the event has become a recurring and awaited appointment by the many tourists who come to Salerno during the Christmas period specifically to see the Luci d'Artista.

We have proposed an itinerary for people in wheelchairs who go to Salerno with their own car and stay for a day; nothing prevents you from arriving in Salerno by train and / or staying overnight in the city. In the hypothesis of arriving in Salerno by car in the morning, the first destination we suggest is the Arechi Castle (*). It is a medieval fortification whose name refers to that of a Lombard duke, Arechi II, who in the eighth century AD. made it the pivot of his defensive system (www.ilcastellodiarechi.it).

After the visit to the Arechi Castle, we recommend going down to the Salerno seafront, very extensive and very pleasant to walk around with a chair. For parking it is advisable to go to Piazza della Concordia, where there are 11 spaces reserved for disabled cars, located in the part of the square closest to the sea.

For lunch we found a restaurant that meets our requirements, located right on the seafront, directly overlooking the rocks: Embarcadero (*): Lungomare Trieste (near Embarcadero), s.n.c. 089 225180 https://embarcaderosalerno.it/ When it is time for the lights to turn on, we suggest you go to Piazza Flavio Gioia and from there begin your visit to the historic center illuminated by the Artist Lights, along Via dei Mercanti and reaching the Villa Comunale, where over the years In the past, particularly effective lights have been installed. In any case it is advisable to consult the website of the Municipality of Salerno, from which to download maps and various documentation. For our part, we would like to give a couple of suggestions: - avoid the days of greatest crowding, because in recent years there has been such an influx as to clog the streets and consequently make the visit particularly difficult for those who travel in wheelchairs;

- pay close attention to the paving of the streets of the historic center, which presents its good difficulties for chairs. We have avoided recommending other visits to the monuments of Salerno, which are very important, because our experiences have shown us many difficulties in accessing the various sites with a chair; we will try to return to Salerno with the specific aim of taking a census of the monuments and their accessibility. For the moment we just leave you with some images taken from the previous edition of the Lights, just to give you an idea. (*) symbol indicating the presence of toilets equipped for the disabled.
