Venafro: a little big town in Molise

Another trespassing from Campania: we left about 90 km from Naples to get to know Venafro (IS), a country rich in precious historical and artistic testimonies. Let's start by saying that the city was a Roman colony in the 1st century BC. with the name of Colonia Augusta Julia Venafrum; in the following centuries it went through the historical vicissitudes of southern Italy, from the capital of a county of the Lombard duchy of Benevento in the 10th century AD, passing through the period of splendor in the 15th century with the Pandones up to being upset by the battles of Cassino in World War Two. So let's see these testimonies of the history of Venafro, and to do so let's start with the most important structure, the Archaeological Museum of Venafro (*). The museum is housed in the former convent of Santa Chiara and is very rich in sculptures, inscriptions, funerary stones from the Roman age, frescoes and finds from the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno (a monastic complex that gained European fame in the first half of the 9th century and destroyed by the Saracens in 881). All the museum's material is arranged in very original and modern settings. The reference website is the following: https://www.musei.molise.beniculturali.it/musei?mid=213&nome=museo-archeologico-di-venafro To access the museum it is advisable for people with motion disabilities to have their own car and a companion; parked the car in Piazza Nicola Verola, (there are two places reserved for the disabled), take Via de Amicis and immediately on the right is the entrance dedicated to us. The companion reaches the ticket office and goes back down with a museum employee to open the door of our access point. The collection is spread over two floors, accessible by lift. Some images to give an idea of the richness of the material on display:

Leaving the museum, we head towards the Cathedral of Venafro, on whose accessibility we cannot say, having found it closed, so we show the facade with the two monstrous figures that emerge from it:

Let's take a look at the Public Gardens, with its basin and fountain:

And let's close the tour for Venafro with an image of the Pandone Castle:

But surely it will take another expedition to Venafro to verify the accessibility of a series of monuments that we have not had time to visit (Pandone Castle, Roman Theater, Church of San Nicandro, Church of the Annunziata). For lunch we have found a restaurant that meets our requirements: Il Quadrifoglio (*): State Road 85 Venafrana 144, Venafro +39 0865 909886 https://www.facebook.com/il.quadrifoglio.900/ (*) symbol indicating the presence of toilets equipped for the disabled
