The ancient Capua of the Romans (and not only)

Today we return to the province of Caserta, and precisely in what is now called Santa Maria Capua Vetere (you can get there by exiting at the Santa Maria Capua Vetere tollbooth of the Autostrada del Sole). The city rises on the territory of what was once the ancient Capua of the Romans, and hosts important vestiges, starting with the Campanian Amphitheater (*) (https://cultura.gov.it/luogo/anfiteatro-campano). It is the largest Roman building of this type after the Colosseum, and is a destination for the most part accessible to people with motor disabilities. And then, having parked the car, we enter the ticket office and the bar, where the equipped toilets are located, and with an easy path we arrive at the amphitheater.

The ride in the wheelchair in the amphitheater is quite easy, with due caution in some more disconnected points; the walkways allow you to reach the hemicycle and admire the grandeur of the structure.

In the area of the amphitheater there is also the Museum of the Gladiators, a small structure in which finds of gladiators activity, bas-reliefs with fighting scenes and a model that reconstructs the original structure of the amphitheater are displayed.

After visiting the Campanian Amphitheater, you can go to the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Capua (https://cultura.gov.it/luogo/museo-archeologico-dell-antica-capua-e-mitreo). The Museum presents the materials brought to light during the excavations carried out in the second half of the twentieth century in what was once the territory of Capua, from the Bronze Age to the Etruscans and the Samnites.

For lunch we propose three solutions that still require you to get back by car, take the Autostrada del Sole to the north and exit at Caianello. These are three farmhouses, all meeting our requirements: Bosco Farneto (*): Strada Vadopiano, Presenzano 0823 989506/337 945128 www.boscofarneto.it Il contadino (*): Via Starze 159, Caianello 0823 922043/339 5928649 www.berardinolombardo.it Al Centimolo (*): Via Centimolo 1, Caianello 0823 922878/331 8998821 www.agriturismoalcentimolo.it (*) symbol indicating the presence of toilets equipped for the disabled We close with the photos taken at the gathering of the Strabordo Association, organized by us in 2014, which had the Amphitheater as a second stop after Paestum:
